Our Inspiration
Langar Sewa
Guru Nanak Sahib Ji laid the foundation of the concept of langar or the Sikh community kitchen, in a very unique way. When Guru Ji was about 12 years old, his father, Mehta Kalu, himself a successful businessman, wanted his son to also establish himself in business. Mehta Kalu gave his son, Guru Nanak Sahib Ji Rupees 20. Mehta Kalu told his son to use the money to do “Sacha Sauda’, meaning to make a profitable trade.Accompanied by his brother, Balram, Guru Nanak Sahib Ji set out to make some purchases. On the way, they came across a village, where the people were starving, thirsty and sick due to lack of water and an outbreak of disease.Moved by their plight, Guru Ji bought some food and distributed this food among these people. On returning home, Guru Nanak Sahib Ji told his father, Mehta Kalu, what he did. The father was angry and chided his son for wasting money.

Guru Nanak Sahib Ji said, "Father you asked us to carry out some profitable transaction. No bargain can be more truly profitable than to feed and clothe the needy. I cannot leave this true bargain. It is seldom that we get an opportunity to carry out some profitable transaction like this."At 12 years of age, by investing Rupees 20, Guru Nanak Sahib Ji laid the foundations for investment in the langar or the Sikh community kitchen, which continues till today. Doing good to the people is the way of a Sikh. Sharing with the needy, makes the day of a Sikh. The true bargain of life is sharing one's earning and learnings with the needy and helping in whatever way we can.
We modeled our organization in honor of this Sikh devotion to humanity and selfless service.

Our Story
Sikh Health Network, or SHN, began with two high school students in Campolindo High and Miramonte High in Northern California who were exploring ways to help their community when the world and their local communities were all struggling to fight against the pandemic of COVID-19. More than ever, this was an opportunity to think out of the box on ways to help educate people, provide health consultation easily, regularly and effectively. We believe people feel the most comfortable in accepting these benefits when it comes from people like them in their local community.
El Sobrante Gurudwara Sahib was the first place where they started visiting on 1st Sunday of each month since August of 2021 to setup a free clinic and educational seminar. They registered doctors to donate their time to this clinic and summoned volunteers to help conduct the free clinic.
Today we have over 600+ patients that are registered in our Electronic Medical Record (EMR) System that is HIPAA complaint to receive free health consults at the El Sobrante Gurudwara Sahib.
